Researchers from the University of Calgary, Alberta, found that consuming mineral and vitamin supplements can enhance a person's mood and increase energy levels.
A recent Centers of Disease Control and Prevention report stated that one in every 10 Americans suffers from depression and anxiety. Also, it is not a secret that obesity has become a growing problem in the country, which leads to people having lower energy levels. On similar lines, researchers from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada conducted a study wherein they found that consumption of minerals and vitamins can be an effective way of checking both problems.
Bonnie Kaplan, Ph.D., professor in the faculty of medicine at the University of Calgary, conducted a series of test on 97 American adults that were diagnosed with mood disorders. Their food intake was recorded for three days wherein they were give higher amounts of minerals and vitamins. Kaplan found that after three days, the participants experienced an overall enhanced mental functioning. 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5 HTP), Vitamins B and D are some of the vitamins that have been identified as mood enhancers. Ginkgo biloba and Omega 3 were also found to enhance mental functioning.
C.J. Geiger, Ph.D., president of Geiger & Associates, LLC, and research associate professor in the division of nutrition at the University of Utah, mentioned that many Americans reported being most energized in the morning. Their energy levels dropped in the afternoon after lunch and again gained momentum late afternoons. It again dropped before bed time. This varying energy levels depended on gender, age and climate. Geiger said she noticed many people using coffee, soft drinks, chocolate and candy bars as well as energy drinks, bars and chews with high sugar boosts to maintain energy throughout the day. She suggested these can be replaced by healthier mineral and vitamin supplements.
