Matt Harvey has been nothing short of dominant in his first full Major League season. His stellar first half has gotten him a start in the All-Star game, an appearance in ESPN the Magazine’s “Body Issue” and fame throughout all of New York City.
Well, that last one may be debatable. Harvey recently appeared on NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” He was asked to interview New Yorkers in a segment called “Matt Harvey asks New Yorkers About Matt Harvey.” It was kind of surprising how much people either didn’t know who he was or didn’t recognize they were talking to the Mets ace.
“Do you know anything about Matt Harvey,” the Mets pitcher asks the first gentleman in the video.
The response: “Who’s Matt Harvey?”
Harvey then asks Mets fans to name their favorite player. One man expectedly said Mets captain and third baseman David Wright. Another said left fielder Lucas Duda. (Really?)
When Harvey asks the “Lucas Duda” gentleman what he thought about Matt Harvey he said, “He’s a stud.” To which Harvey said, “Thank you.”
One fan’s response to the “favorite player” question was, “Oh dude, Harvey man.” When Harvey asked what kind of advice the fan, sporting a Matt Harvey jersey, would give the UNC product the fan said, “Keep being awesome.”
Two fans mentioned Harvey’s appearance in the Body Issue. After they both figured out who he was one fan asked, “ Why’d you do that?”
Another said, “My wife loved your pictures in the magazine.” Harvey asked, “That’s what she loves, not the pitching?”
“Nope she loved your butt,” the fan responded.
Harvey pitched two innings in last night’s all star game. He gave up no runs, a double, hit Robinson Cano of the Yankees and struck out three batters.
One fan thought Harvey wouldn’t even start the game. When the Mets pitcher asked who should start, the young man said “Clayton Kershaw.” He said Harvey was “Decent. But he hasn’t proved enough he’s only gone a couple months now.” When Harvey finally introduced himself, the kid walked away in disbelief.
