Tumblr App for iOS Pushes Update To Fix Security Glitch That Left User's Passwords Vulnerable

Tumblr has released an update for its iOS app on Tuesday that includes a "very important security update," which addresses an internal flaw with the application that may put user's account passwords at risk.

In a post on the Yahoo-owned company's blog, it urged users of the iOS app for iPhones and iPods to "please download this update now" and to change their passwords immediately on the site as well as on other sites where the same password might be used.

The security issue, which the company did not describe in detail apparently doesn't affect the site's application for Android mobile devices as no version of an update has been pushed through the Google Play store.

In a statement to TheNextWeb, Yahoo responded to the vulnerability mentioning that it wasn't aware of its existence until Tuesday.

"Earlier today, Tumblr was notified of a security vulnerability introduced in our iOS app. We immediately released an update that repairs the issue and are notifying affected users. We obviously take these incidents very seriously and deeply regret this error."

Tumblr is a microblogging website that has over 300 million monthly unique visitors according to CNET. Users can go and post picture, audio, video and text to as many blogs as they wish to keep up with themes runnig everywhere from fan blogs to political blogs. Las month, Yahoo acquired the company for $1.1 billion. The site is the popular go-to spot for people who want to waste a little bit of time looking at fun things online that are tailored to their own personal interests. With such a wide and dedicated user base, the company was quick to respond to anything that might be looked at as a betrayal of confidence, such as password leaks.

"Please know that we take your security very seriously and are tremendously sorry for this lapse and inconvenience," the company wrote on its blog.
