Disney has been making some grand plans for the Star Wars universe ever since it purchased Lucasfilm in 2012. Not only did Disney want to continue the franchise with a brand new trilogy, but the powers that be also wanted to release standalone films to supplement the new installments. This plan will kick off this December with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and continue next year with the first spinoff film "Star Wars: Rouge One."
But Disney's $4 billion investment may expand well beyond the silver screen. Cinelinx is reporting that the development of a live-action "Star Wars" television series is currently underway and is set to be filmed in the same locations and sets built for the new movies. According to the site, the show has been on Disney's mind for some time, but the Mouse House wanted to finalize movie dates before focusing on TV. If the report is believed to be true, the show would film in between movie shoots to give it a higher production value and similar look to the blockbusters.
As of now, there is no timeline for the series. Gareth Edwards' spinoff and Rian Johnson's Episode VIII will hit theaters within five months of each other, which doesn't leave a whole lot of time for a TV show.
Unfortunately, Cinelinx does not provide much in the way of possible content for the show. The site does claim that the studio is considering appointing a character from one of the upcoming Star Wars novels as the main protagonist. However, it is not known which character is being considered or when the series would take place in the canon timeline.
The Star Wars universe offers endless possibilities in terms of storylines and characters. Although some fans may rail against this project from a creative standpoint, it makes too much sense financially for Disney not to explore. If Marvel's Daredevil series -- owned by Disney and debuting on Netflix next month -- is successful, Disney could look to the online streaming service as a possible landing spot for its Star Wars series.
Remember, all of this is an unconfirmed rumor at this point. We'll have to wait and see if Disney is serious about a Star Wars TV show. We'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
