Tragedy struck one Florida family on Wednesday when a 13-year-old boy shot and killed his brother before turning the gun on himself over an argument about food, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Pasco County sheriffs say the 13-year-old and his two brothers, ages 6 and 16, were alone at their Hudson home Wednesday evening when a dispute broke out over their meal. The 13-year-old grabbed a handgun and shot both of his brothers before committing suicide.
The 6-year-old was killed but the eldest survived the shooting and was able to call police. He is now recovering at a hospital from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
"This is a horrific scene," Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco told the Tampa Bay Times. "This is a nightmare when you hear about the ages of these boys, a 6-year-old that was probably playing in his room, an argument over food and he lost his life."
Pasco County investigators have not released the names of any of the brothers as they determine who owned the gun used in the incident. Their mother and another 18-year-old sibling were not home at the time of the shootings.
Residents at the Sugar Lane Mobile Home Park, where the family lives, described the 13-year-old as "quiet," the newspaper reported.
Josh Hicks, who lives behind the brothers, said he liked listening to music and stuck to himself.
"I didn't think he would ever do something like this," Hicks said.
