No. 7 Michigan State's surprising tournament run continues Friday with a 62-58 win over No. 3 Oklahoma. Spartans guard Travis Trice had another big game, finishing with a team-high 24 points, and Denzel Valentine added 18 points, including 13 in the second half.
"The first half, I felt like that was my first time playing basketball," Valentine said, via ESPN. "But I just kind of snapped out of it. I was like, 'I'm in Sweet 16, and we've got a chance to go to the Final 4. I'm a junior, what the heck.' I just smacked the ground and I woke up I guess."
While Valentine upped his scoring output in the second half, the Spartans' defense upped its effort on the opposite end of the court and became far more aggressive against the Sooners' offense.
"I get to work another day. I can't tell you how excited that makes me," said Spartans coach Tom Izzo. "I'm just tickled to death to still be playing."
No. 4 Louisville earned a spot in the Elite 8 after defeating NC State on Friday, 75-65. Junior forward Montrezl Harrell, who says he intends to declare for the NBA draft after the season, led the Cardinals with 24 points, and sophomore guard Terry Rozier chipped in with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
"We don't want to go home," said Harrell. "We took our bumps and bruises throughout the season, but we came together at the right time. Everything just jelled at the right time."
