Teacher Asks Parents To Sign Off On Students Eating Oreos

Has a teacher in Pennsylvania gone too far to protect herself from parent backlash?

According to The Washington Post, the mother of a student at Welsh Valley Middle School in Pennsylvania was taken back when her young one came home with a permission slip that had to be signed for a science investigation involving Double Stuf Oreos.

The mother had to sign the paper in order for her child to be allowed to eat the Oreo at the end of teacher Darlene Porter's science class. The project involved using the cookies to emulate earth's plate movements. The student's mom was so shocked she Tweeted out a photo of the permission slip, according to Reason.

"Insanity. I have to sign a permission slip so my middle schooler can eat an Oreo," the woman, who simply goes by Main Line Housewife on Twitter, wrote on the social media site.

"The students may eat the OREO after the investigation, if this is OK with you," the form reads. "The students do NOT have to eat the OREO if they do not wish to do so."

Philly.com reached out to the Lower Merion School District, which in a response defended the teacher's choice.

"It's one teacher who was really trying to do her due diligence, quite honestly," school district spokesman Doug Young said.
