Dwayne Johnson had the option to play either the DC hero Shazam or the supervillain Black Adam in the upcoming "Shazam!" movie. He chose the latter but not before consulting with his fans.
"In 2007 or 2008, I publicly took a swing," Johnson explained to Digital Spy. "I asked the fans, 'Who would you rather see me play?" I really left it up to them... and Black Adam won out."
The "Furious 7" will star as the prime adversary to Shazam (formerly known as Captain Marvel) in the DC/Warner Bros. film, set to premiere on April 5, 2019. He ultimately made his decision based on the depth of the Black Adam character.
"What made me choose Black Adam was I just inherently felt Black Adam was more interesting to me because I felt like there were more layers to Black Adam, starting out as a slave and then ultimately becoming the anti-hero who we enjoy today," Johnson said.
Black Adam is the only character cast so far in "Shazam!" He's rumored to make his first appearance in the DC movie "Justice League Part One," which will open in theaters on Nov. 17, 2017.
Johnson stars in "Furious 7," opening this Friday. He also will lead the action thriller "San Andreas" on May 29.
