Derek Jeter Injury Update: Yankees Return The Captain to the DL

Derek Jeter returned to the disabled list Friday due to a right quad strain, reported ESPNNewYork.com. Jeter will be able to come off the DL on July 27.

The Yankee’s captain suffered the injury if his first game of the 2013 season on July 11, after he missed a total of 91 games due to an ankle injury. He went 1-for-4 in his first day back.

Following the quad injury, the team had an MRI conducted on the shortstop after which he sat out the next three games. He was treated for the injury during the All-Star break before the team decided to put him on the DL.

Eduardo Nunez will play shortstop in his Jeter’s absence.

Jeter will join the other important Yankees who are currently out of commission—first baseman Mark Teixeira is suffering from a wrist injury, center fielder Curtis Granderson is suffering from a broken pinkie and catcher Francisco Cervelli is suffering from a broken hand.

Jeter suffered the ankle injury last October during a playoff game against the Detroit Tigers.

While the Yankees are seven games over .500 and doing well in the NL East, they could use Jeter’s bat in the lineup. They haven’t gotten much production from the shortstop position this year with the combination of Jason Nix and Eduardo Nunez. Nunez is batting .215 with no homeruns and eight RBIs in 36 games. In 73 games Nix , who is currently rehabbing with the minor-league Tampa Yankees for a right hamstring strain, is batting .236 with 2 homeruns and 20 RBIs.

Last season Jeter, at age 38, Jeter had the second most hits in a season for this career with 216. He hit .314 with 15 homeruns and 58 RBIs. Therefore, although he’s growing in age, Jeter has proven that, if healthy, he can still get it done at the plate.
