Florida Couple Killed In Sleep After SUV Slams Into Mobile Home

A couple was killed in their sleep after an SUV swerved off a highway and crashed into their Palmetto, Fla. mobile home early Wednesday morning.

The tragedy occurred at around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday when 35-year-old Christian Crawford, of Bradenton, was driving northbound on U.S. 41, WTSP-TV reported.

Crawford swerved across the median and southbound lanes and crashed through a fence before slamming into the back of a mobile home, Palmetto Police told the station.

A man and a woman their 20s, along with the woman's unborn child, were instantly killed. Police said the woman was not far from giving birth. A man named Christian Carlos told the Associated Press the victims were his brother, Ivan Carlos, and his pregnant girlfriend.

"I've worked at the Palmetto Police Department for 20 years, and we've never had a crash like this," Chief Scott Tyler told the AP.

Residents at the Lone Oak Mobile Home Park about 40 miles south of Tampa awoke to a loud noise and screams from family members.

"It was like a big boom. I thought it was the tree that fell," Luis Ubrina, who hopped out of bed to help the victims, told WTSP.

The driver was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and reportedly consented to alcohol and drug testing. The incident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.

Crawford has a history of arrests in Manatee County, the last time being in August for a criminal registrant felony.
