Kevin James Signs TV Deal With Sony, Will Star In New Sitcom

"King Of Queens" star Kevin James is returning to TV with a new sitcom, Deadline reported exclusively Thursday.

According to Deadline, James and his Hey Eddie Productions signed a two-year first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television in order to produce TV programming, including a sitcom with James in the starring role. (A first-look deal is "a deal wherein a particular studio has the first option on a filmmaker's projects," according to Variety.

Sony Pictures Entertainment is the studio behind "King Of Queens," the hit CBS sitcom that ran from 1998 to 2007 in which James played the titular character, aka Doug Heffernan.

"We've had tremendous success with Kevin from his big-screen debut in 'Hitch,' to Adam Sandler's 'Grown Ups' films and 'Pixels,' and the films based on his distinctive comic persona Paul Blart," said Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, according to Deadline. "We're excited to remain his feature film home and continue to make movies based on the characters that Kevin creates - loveable [sic] guys who aren't perfect, but who have huge hearts that win the day."

"Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" opens April 17.
