Giuliana Rancic and her husband Bill have always been open about their desire to expand their family after the birth of their son Edward Duke via surrogate back in August 2012, but now the E! News correspondent is revealing a devastating blow to her family's plans.
In an interview with People Magazine, Giuliana shared that she learned on New Year's Eve that their surrogate, who was pregnant with the couple's last embryo, recently miscarried. The 40-year-old "Fashion Police" co-host, who revealed to Life & Style Magazine last month that she only has one frozen embryo left, called the situation "painful."
"It was painful," Giuliana told People magazine. "We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, 'This is definitely going to work.'"
The miscarriage is also the couple's last chance of giving their son a biological sibling. Since the birth of their son, the Rancics had three remaining embryos. The first two were successfully implanted in their surrogate in 2014; however, she suffered a miscarriage weeks later. Giuliana called the latest loss "the toughest blow."
"It was a really hard time," she added.
Giuliana, a breast cancer survivor, is currently on cancer-suppressing medication following her 2011 breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent double mastectomy, and won't take the risk of getting pregnant herself.
Even with no more embryos, Giuliana still hasn't lost hope when it comes to expanding her family.
"We're open to everything," she told People. "I think adoption is a beautiful gift you're giving each other. And it's funny, I'm even more open to [adoption] than I was before. Because I think to myself, 'I love Duke so much, if I couldn't take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.'"
