Vin Diesel took to the stage of the San Diego Comic-Con once again in order to promote his newest sci-fi adventure as the dark but action heavy anti-hero Riddick where the actor professed his wish to see the franchise restarted once again.
It was a mere 13 years ago that a low-budget film called "Pitch Black" made its debut at Comic-Con. The film amassed a cult following and even spawned a sequel "The Chronicles of Riddick." Since the characters original creation, the main actor, Diesel, has fallen in and out of the limelight and on and off the A list. However, with the Fast and Furious franchise doing so well, Diesel is back and only wants to use that status to propel this character along.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, with the third installment in the franchise, Riddick sheds some of its trappings. It is not a studio picture from universal but rather a negative pick-up.
"Our creative meetings were in Vin's kitchen, I sat on the counter... it made everything very streamlined," director David Twohy said. He wrote the script on spec and the movie raised its finances at Berlin's European Film Market. Universal merely came back on board to distribute the film.
According to Diesel himself, the second film was pressured into being a PG-13 release but the newest Riddick contains more R-rated features.
"When the audience wanted it rated R, we knew we didn't have to spend $200 million to make this movie," he said. The actor also spoke of his life changes since he first put on Riddick's goggles, mainly the fact that he is now a father.
"I feel guilty for having such a darkness in that character. Now I go, 'That wasn't needed, you shouldn't have killed that guy.' It's only because I have kids now," he said.
Meanwhile, Diesel was asked, in a roundabout way, if he would play The Vision in Marvel's Avengers 2. Unfortunately, he couldn't share any details other then there is big news on that front coming soon.
