Fourteen people were injured on Easter Sunday after the roof came crashing down during services at Korean Union United Methodist Church in Rahway, N.J.
The worshipers were treated at local hospitals after the 2 p.m. incident, and 13 people had only suffered from minor injuries, while one injury - a 4-inch gash on the head - was considered to be more serious, but not life-threatening, according to CBS New York.
Members of the Manantial de Vida Pentecostal congregation, which rents out the church, were in the middle of a song when they heard a cracking sound above them.
"We saw the ceiling going down. Well not going down, but collapsing. We didn't think it would actually fall," one witness said.
Churchgoers' songs turned into a chorus of screams as they tried to escape the falling debris.
Ashley Soto, who was attending the holy service, said a teacher had instructed the worshipers to sit on the perimeter of the room to avoid being hit by the pieces of the ceiling, NJ.com reported.
Others were protected because they hid underneath benches, Pastor Cesar Caceres said.
"You could definitely say that God was watching over the members of the congregation," Mayor Samson Steinman said. "It could have been a lot worse."
The investigation is still ongoing as to what caused the collapse.
