When the name of the new Avengers movie was announced during the Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 the crowd nearly lost their minds upon learning who the new villain is going to be; "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" is scheduled for a May 1, 2015 release date, according to the Huffington Post.
At the end of the first Avengers movie it was hinted that Thanos, the purple fella with the goofy chin, would be the villain for the new movie; now that seems a bit unlikely with a different villain, Ultron, having his name in the title of the film.
While Ultron is a favorite villain among super fans he's not really that well known. Uproxx gave a quick explanation of what the Avengers have in store for them with Ultron, "He's a robot who wants to wipe out humanity and replace them with robots." Ultron was also created by Hank Pym, an Avenger who has not appeared in the movies thus far.
Recently Marvel completed a series called the "Age of Ultron." If that series is any indication of where the storyline of the movie will go it will indicate a very dark movie. In the series Ultron comes very close to destroying the Earth and some of the superheroes who go up against him end up getting killed, according to The Wrap.
Director Joss Whedon said in an interview that the new movie won't be entirely based on the recent series of comics.
"Well, because there was a book called 'Age of Ultron' quite recently, a lot of people have assumed that is what we're doing, but that is not the case," Whedon said. "We're doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron. In the origin story, there was a Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed he will be in the mix. He's not. We're basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall be the wayside."
Marvel still has three movies to build storyline for the upcoming Avengers sequel; "Thor: The Dark World," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," and "Guardians of the Galaxy." Until then fans will just have to keep waiting and wondering what exactly Whedon has in store for the future of the Marvel universe.
