Nvidia Shield Release Date And Specs: Company Announces July 31 Shipping After One-Month Delay

About one month after it announced a shipping delay due to an undisclosed "mechanical issue" the Nvidia Shield portable gaming device will finally be shipped to customers in the U.S. later this month on July 31.

The electronics chip-maker began informing people who preordered the Android-based handheld gaming device of the new delivery date on Sunday via e-mail. According to Android Police, who obtained and published a copy of the e-mail, the company has remained apologetic yet optimistic throughout the whole delay process.

"We want to thank you for your patience and for sticking with us through the shipment delay of your SHIELD. We have great news to share with you - your SHIELD will ship on July 31st," the e-mail wrote. "Our goal has always been to ship the perfect product, so we made sure we submitted SHIELD to the most rigorous mechanical testing and quality assurance standards in the industry. We built SHIELD because we love playing games, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do."

The device was originally supposed to ship to customers on June 27 but was delayed, much to the dismay of eager consumers who preordered the handheld gaming device which will offer such titles as "Borderlands 2" and "Sonic 4 Episode 2" to users on a mobile platform along with apps like Facebook, Hulu Plus and Twitter.

While the Shield originally cost $349, the Shield's price was cut to $299 before the original release date. When it ships, the device will sport a five-inch display at 1,280x720 pixel touch screen. It will feature a 16GB storage, Mini-HDMI, Micro-USB 2.0, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, integrated speakers, a headphone jack and micro SD card slot for storage expansion, according to CNET. It will be among the first to house the Tegra 4 processor and sets itself apart from others with its ability to stream PC games in full over a WiFi connection.
