ABC's 'World News Tonight' Beats NBC's 'Nightly News' Ratings For First Time In Several Years

ABC's "World News Tonight" show finally took the title of the most-watched evening newscast, surpassing NBC's "Nightly News" for the first time in 288 weeks.

"I'm so proud of David and this incredible team. They've been intently focused on the viewers from the moment we started and we so appreciate they are responding. There is still so much work to do," Almin Karamehmedovic, Executive Producer of ABC's "World News Tonight With David Muir," said in a statement.

This was the first time ABC's nightly news broadcast has surpassed NBC in several years.

ABC's newscast had 7.99 million viewers last week, as opposed to NBC's 7.91 million, reported Deadline.

The ratings competition increased in intensity after Brian Williams, "Nightly News'" former anchor, after he was suspended for faulty claims he made while reporting the news. Lester Holt took over the position after Williams' departure from the position.

While NBC's five year winning streak came to an end, the network released a statement that shows they are not intimidated by their increased competition with ABC.

"Lester Holt has led NBC Nightly News to great success over the past two months, and we continue to be pleased with his strong performance during this time. We're proud of the caliber of our work and remain committed to delivering the highest-quality broadcast to our audience every night."
