A pit bull puppy saved the lives of his Indianapolis family when their home caught fire Monday afternoon.
When homeowner Jennifer Green was working in her basement that afternoon, her barking pit bull, Raja, caught her attention and led her to a fire spreading on her back porch, reported The Associated Press.
Thanks to Raja's quick response, the family was able to get out of the house safely.
"If it wasn't for Raja, I probably wouldn't be here. I probably would have been trapped in the basement with smoke inhalation and I would be dead," Green told WKRN, an ABC affiliate.
The fire, which firefighters were able to get under control in under 30 minutes, was believed to be caused by the ashes Green threw out from a pit fire in a plastic trash can on the porch, reported the AP.
The Indianapolis Fire Department told WKRN that hot ashes like these should be soaked in water before they are discarded to prevent a fire like this from happening.
Damages from the house were estimated at $160,000, AP reported. Despite the loss, Green is just happy she is alive, and credits Raja for saving her life.
"He's going to get a steak at some point, so we'll get all that taken care of. He got a lot of treats last night [Monday], that's for sure," Green told WKRN.
