Sarah Koenig's "Serial" told the nation Adnan Syed's story. Now, nearly four months after the podcast ended, the narrative of his connection to the 1999 Baltimore murder of Hae Min Lee will continue on a different show.
A new podcast, "Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed," will be hosted by attorney Rabia Chaudry and release new episodes on a bi-weekly basis starting April 13, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Sarah Koenig has no connection to the podcast, though, as the second season of "Serial" will focus on a completely different, still unannounced, story.
"There is no affiliation between 'Undisclosed' and 'Serial.' We have not been working with the 'Undisclosed' team on their podcast," a representative from "This American Life," an offshoot of NPR, Koenig's employer, told BuzzFeed News.
Chaudry is a friend of the Syed family and was interviewed by Koenig on the first season of "Serial." "Undisclosed" will focus on the murder of Hae Min Lee and Syad's story in more of a legal perspective than "Serial" did, according to the New York Times.
The Adnan Syed Legal Defense Fund is financially supporting the new podcast. It has raised more than $93,000 since Chaudry started it.
Since season one of "Serial" ended, there have been many developments in Syed's case. He is still imprisoned, and has been since 2000, but is closer than he ever has been to getting a new trial.
As BuzzFeed News points out, Chaundry has a personal blog and was very critical of how Koenig handled "Serial" on it.
"In a way, as Sarah wondered if Adnan was manipulating her, we all wondered if Sarah was doing the same thing to us," Chaudry wrote after season one of "Serial" ended.
