John Bailey caught the moment on Monday night while walking along Sebastian Inlet State Park on Vero Beach in Florida. Bailey saw the cat leap and drag the four-feet-long (one meter) shark out of the water, according to National Geographic. When Bailey took a picture with his iPhone 6, the startled bobcat ran away, leaving the shark on the beach.
A spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told the press that the photograph appears authentic. Bobcats will sometimes eat fish, "but this is the first time we've seen them fishing in saltwater," said Liz Barraco of the opportunistic hunter.
The number of bobcats in Florida is unknown, Barraco told National Geographic, but "they can successfully live near the coast if there are patches of natural habitat nearby, even if there is development in the area."
