After a petition circled around the University of Michigan's campus, school officials nixed the scheduled screening of "American Sniper" because the film's content made the students feel "unsafe" and "uncomfortable."
Students also criticized the film and said it portrays "negative and misleading stereotypes" of Muslims.
The school offered to replace the controversial war film with "Paddington," a kids' movie that features a bear searching for a new home as the main character - pretty different storylines, don't you think?
By late Wednesday night, the University of Michigan decided to let both movies play, and despite student protests, "American Sniper" will be screened as scheduled, according to the New York Daily News.
Those who are uncomfortable with it can choose to watch the family-friendly movie in a separate location or neither of the options.
University Vice President for Student Life E. Royster Harper called the decision to cancel the Friday night showing a "mistake" in a statement, Fox News reported.
"The initial decision to cancel the movie was not consistent with the high value the University of Michigan places on freedom of expression and our respect for the right of students to make their own choices in such matters," Harper said. "The movie will be shown at the originally scheduled time and location."
The petition on "American Sniper" - a biopic of U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle, who was known as one of the most lethal snipers in the U.S. - garnered 400 signatures by Tuesday night and referred to the late Kyle as "a racist who took a disturbing stance on murdering Iraqi civilians," according to MLive.
The school never thought that offering the film as an alternative for Friday night partying would receive so much backlash, but not all members of the community felt the same.
Jim Harbaugh, the school's football coach, expressed his support via Twitter.
"Michigan Football will watch 'American Sniper'! Proud of Chris Kyle & Proud to be an American & if that offends anybody then so be it!" he wrote.
"American Sniper" stars Bradley Cooper and was directed by Clint Eastwood. The film was a Best Picture nominee and the highest-grossing movie of 2014.
