Round 2 of the Masters Tournament kicked off on Friday at 7:45 a.m. ET when Ian Woosnam and Erik Compton teed off at Augusta National. A number of other PGA stars are already on the course, but many are waiting for leader Jordan Spieth to get out there at 9:57 a.m. ET.
Spieth shot a first-round 64, which was one stroke off from the best score in any major. He's in the lead at 8-under par, sitting three strokes ahead of Charley Hoffman (-5), Justin Rose (-5), Ernie Els (-5) and Jason Day (-5), all of whom are tied for second place. The 21-year-old Spieth shot a 32 on both the front and back nine and carded nine birdies and one bogey. He's the youngest golfer to ever lead after the first round of the Masters.
"Except for one hiccup on the par-5 15th, Spieth was all but perfect. Hitting 15 of 18 greens with 25 putts, there was a moment at which it looked like he might be going after the course record of 63," writes ESPN's Michael Collins. "I'll admit it, I thought he might have a sophomore slump. Well, slap me and call me silly. But remember, the last guy in 30 years to win wire-to-wire was Trevor Immelman in 2008."
Despite Spieth's historic first round, a number of other notable names remain in the running, including Russell Henley (-4), Sergio Garcia (-4), Patrick Reed (-2), Dustin Johnson (-2), Phil Mickelson (-2), Billy Horschel (-2), Gary Woodland (-1), Tom Watson (-1), Keegan Bradley (-1), Bubba Watson (-1), Rory McIlroy (-1), Adam Scott (E), Zach Johnson (E), Tiger Woods (+1), Rickie Fowler (+1), Henrik Stenson (+1) and Jimmy Walker (+1).
The projected cut is two-over par right now and top names such as Hunter Mahan (+3), Vijay Singh (+3), Luke Donald (+3), Martin Kaymer (+4), Miguel Jimenez (+6) are likely going to need under-par rounds today to make it through the weekend. Jim Furyk (+2), Ryan Moore (+2) and Victor Dubuisson (+2) are on the cusp and need to avoid making bogeys on Day 2.
It'll surely be an interesting day, as Bubba Watson looks to inch his way up the leaderboard to defend his title while Spieth hopes to separate from the pack and get revenge on the two-time Masters winner from last year's event. McIlroy needs to make some noise during the second round as he hopes to notch a career grand slam, and Woods looks to rebound after his two-month hiatus to capture his fifth green jacket. Mickelson's solid first round has him in the running to take home his fourth Masters tournament victory and fellow veteran Ernie Els could become the second oldest player at 45 years old (behind Jack Nicklaus who was 46) to win the event.
