Ben Farrell, a former Apple employee, revealed in a blog post Monday his reasons for leaving the company. His detailed account of the company's workplace shows the not-so-good side of working for the tech giant, describing the environment as "disgusting" and 'toxic."
"I've just escaped the Apple institution. I've sent in my resignation, and fled down its bright white corridors curated by crass colorful pictures of iPhones past. I handed in my security pass and in return I was able to re-claim my creativity, individuality and free thinking from the secure Apple cloak room. Finally now, for the first time in two years, I feel light, creative and inspired," Farrell wrote.
Farrell worked at Apple's Sydney headquarters for two years as a quality program manager for the company's "AppleCare" technical support program. He claimed that Apple does not allow its employees to go on leave even if they are sick, have family emergencies, or even weddings. As for his personal experience, he was called out by the company for missing a business trip when his pregnant wife got hospitalized, when he got hospitalized due to a virus, and during his wedding day, according to the Business Insider.
Despite being a manager, he was given a script during meetings that are usually held at midnight.
"These rehearsals - called 'dry runs' (to me it sounds like something you'd pick up from South East Asian street food) - were meetings to refine impressions and push agendas... how to get the impressions right. How to bend, twist and polish data to tell the story you were instructed to tell... Not the reality the data presents. If a story can't be forged, the data is excluded," Farrell wrote.
Some may think that Farrell's experience is rare, but there were other employees who have shared similar horror stories in the past. Two former Apple directors shared in a podcast last year that the company was extremely demanding.
Apple did not respond on request for comment on this story.
