Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera (.358, 31 HR, 96 RBI) is suffering from a sore right hip flexor according to ESPN.com. Cabrera left in the fifth inning of last night’s matchup against the Chicago White Sox.
He is currently day to day and will be reexamined on Tuesday.
"You know what? If he's got to miss a few games, he's got to miss a few games, and we find out how tough we are," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland.
Leyland said the team will “wait and see” how Cabrera progresses.
Signs of the third baseman’s injury became apparent in the top of the fifth inning. He seemed to slightly hobble while scoring on Victor Martinez’s two-run single. He eventually left the game after the first out in the bottom half of the inning.
He attempted to move his hip but to no avail.
It [felt] weird," said Cabrera,
The Tigers lineup will defiantly miss Cabrera, who won the 2012 MVP award. He’s the best hitter in baseball and—depending on how much time he misses—could win the award this season.
He also won the Triple Crown last season with .330 BA, 44 HR and 139 RBI.
Tigers All-Star right fielder Torii Hunter doesn’t expect the reigning MVP to miss too much time.
"If Miggy comes out of a game he's definitely in pain, but Miggy's one of those guys, he's tough. He won't be out long," said Hunter. "I definitely think if you need to rest him a little bit, a couple days, I guess we have to do that. We need him for the long run. If it takes a couple days for him to get where he needs to be, I think we should do it."
