North Carolina College Shooting Suspect Captured Sleeping On Florida Beach

A former student of North Carolina's Wayne Community College wanted for allegedly killing an employee was captured Tuesday after an hours-long manhunt, police told WCNC.

Kenneth Morgan Stancil III was found sleeping on a beach in Daytona, Florida, at around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Volusia County Beach Patrol approached him for violating Daytona City's ordinance against sleeping on the beach, police said.

Stancil was found with a knife on him. He identified himself when asked and was arrested without incident, WCNC reported.

Police in Goldsboro, North Carolina, believe Stancil shot and killed Ron Lane, a school alumnus who operated the print shop, in the third-floor bathroom of a campus building early Monday morning. A "long gun" was used in the shooting but police did not say if it was a rifle or a shotgun.

A SWAT team and police from multiple agencies descended on the school, checking every building and searching rooms for the suspect. The campus was placed on lockdown for most of the day while many students locked themselves in their dorms until police deemed it safe.

Wayne Community College President Kay Albertson commended the "rapid response from the city, the county, the state and the federal first responders," CNN reported.

A motive for the shooting is not immediately clear but "this is not a random situation," Major Tom Effler of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office told CNN. Stancil, who has a tattoo above his left eye, worked at the paint shop under Lane during his time as a student.

The suspect remains held in Volusia County pending extradition to North Carolina.
