Rio Olympics 2016: 21 Tons of Dead Fish Polluting Rowing Venue [VIDEO]

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes was correct when he basically confirmed that the venues where the 2016 Olympic water events will take place won't be ready in time for the games.

Paes said that in March, and now it is being reported that Rio's Rodrigo de Freitas Lake, which will house the rowing events, is polluted with 21 tons of dead fish, among other kinds of waste. The causes of the mess are "fish die-offs."

"Fish die-offs are a regular occurrence in Rio's waterways due to high levels of pollution" according to The Irish Times. "However the Brazilian Environmental Defence Commisison (Alerj) have said the causes of the die-off were man-made, including contamination in the lake from domestic and industrial waste."

Paes has also gone on record and said the pollution in the Guanabara Bay, where sailing events will take place at next year's Olympics, is having major pollution issues as well.

"I think it's a shame," Paes said, according to The Washington Post. "I think it's a lost opportunity."
