The May 2 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is less than three weeks away, and the barbs keep coming. Mayweather's latest digs at Pacquiao came Tuesday, when he questioned Pacquiao's smarts in the ring and accused him of wearing lifts in his shoes.
Mayweather showed up late to his media day workout Tuesday, but he made sure not leave without giving reporters a couple good sound bites. The first was Mayweather's assessment of the differences between his and Pacquiao's fighting styles.
"We'll see what he brings to the table,'' Mayweather said, according to Fox Sports. ''Our styles are totally different. I fight with smarts. Every move is calculated. Every move is thought out. I'm always 5-10 steps ahead of my opponent. ... I don't know if he can make adjustments. I'm able to make adjustments. He comes at different angles so we'll have to see. But he's facing a solid, strong welterweight.''
Mayweather, who's two wins away from tying Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record, also accused Pacquiao of trying to make himself appear bigger in front of the cameras when the two fighters announced the May 2 fight earlier in the month.
"He wears the lifts in the shoes," Mayweather said. "I know all the secrets he does."
Pacquiao hasn't commented on Mayweather's accusation about wearing lifts, but his trainer did take the time to call Mayweather "selfish" after hearing about the undefeated champion's lateness to his media day workout.
"He was late for his media workout, leaving major media outlets scheduled to go live with dead air. How selfish is that? It doesn't take a lot to figure out why everyone is rooting for Manny," Freddy Roach said Wednesday, according to ESPN. "Just look at which fighter has the most endorsements going into this fight and why. When Manny beats Mayweather, it won't only be about unifying the welterweight titles, it will also be a public service to boxing."
Roach also suggested Mayweather was afraid of Pacquiao and only agreed to fight him now because he ran out of excuses.
