Warner Bros. and DC have been in the news recently for the sudden split with "Wonder Woman" director Michelle MacLaren. Although the studio has found a capable replacement in Patty Jenkins, the behind-the-scenes shuffling has already cast a shadow on the project. Disney and Marvel studios are hoping to avoid that with their own female-led superhero film.
Marvel is eyeing Angelina Jolie to helm "Captain Marvel," the first female-centric blockbuster in their shared cinematic universe, according to Collider.
Marvel had reportedly already offered Jolie $20 million to get behind the camera and she remains the top contender. However, her upcoming project, "Africa," may take precedence.
While Jolie is certainly a big name with some serious star power, her directing ability is still a bit up in the air. Her smaller work, "In the Land of Blood and Honey" drew generally favorable reviews though her big-scale coming out party, "Unbroken," underwhelmed most critics. As of now, she seems better suited to period pieces than alien superhero blockbusters.
Another possible impediment is the creative constraints Marvel puts on its directors. Each film has to fit into the shared universe and include certain storylines and Easter eggs that point further down the road. To be fair, that strategy has helped them build a massively successful cinematic empire, though it may not gel with Jolie's known desire to make tasteful entertainment.
The role of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel has not yet been cast so the film, slated for a November 2018 release, is still in its early stages. We'll keep you posted as more details emerge.
