Recon Instruments has finally launched its Jet Smart Glass after almost two years of redesigns and delays.
The smart eyewear, shipment of which began on Thursday, serves as a competitor for Google Glass, but it is designed to be worn while exercising or play sports instead of throughout the day, according to androidandme.com.
In addition to tracking your activities and storing stats on how you perform in the gym, Recon Jet can also control music and record videos with a camera. Users can also take calls and look at notifications with the glasses thanks to Bluetooth connectivity.
Recon introduced the Jet Pilot Edition in the summer of 2013 for people with an active lifestyle, Android Central reported. However, the Canadian company's CEO believes that the device's capabilities make Thursday's launch worth the wait.
Features of the eyewear include a GPS for tracking, a 1GHz dual-core ARM Corte-A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a pressure sensor, an infrared (IR) sensor and Wi-Fi compatibility, androidandme.com reported.
The only downside of the Recon Jet is that its battery will only last for four hours on a single charge. However, users can swap the battery, so carrying an extra battery along for a long run or bike ride is a good idea.
The original Recon Jet was priced at $499, but the current version is available for $699, which is only half of what Google Glass will cost you, Engadget reported. Recon is also making the smart eyewear available on its website to fitness fanatics in the U.K., Europe, Canada and Japan.
