An ordinary babysitting job took a shocking turn when the sitter realized he was watching a kidnapped toddler, KOMO News reported.
John Truong, of Renton, Wash., didn't think twice about helping his sister when she asked him to watch the 2-year-old Tuesday night and promised to pick him up in the morning. But neither Truong nor his wife knew that an Amber Alert was issued for the boy and his mother who were kidnapped from their Des Moines, Iowa, home, the station reported.
It wasn't until Wednesday morning when Truong realized what he agreed to.
"I'm eating my breakfast, I'm checking my Facebook, all of a sudden I see this Amber Alert for this child," Truong told KOMO. "And it looks like this child in my bed and I'm like, 'Oh my God! What's going on?'"
Truong said his sister, Alyssa M. Chang, asked him to watch the toddler, her boyfriend's son, as a favor so the couple could have a date night. But she never came to pick him up in the morning and did not return Truong's texts, he told the station.
Police say Chang, who has since been arrested, and the toddler's grandmother went to the boy's home and Tasered his mother before kidnapping them both. The two then drove the victims to another house where they tied up the mom and left her in the garage, police told KOMO.
The mother escaped and sought help from a neighbor. Chang was later arrested for investigation of kidnapping, assault and unlawful imprisonment and remains held on $250,000 bail. The grandmother turned herself over to police.
"Honestly I'm at a loss for words right now," Truong said of his sister's alleged actions. "It's just crazy."
After seeing the alert, Truong called police and the boy was rescued - though from Truong's point of view, the child didn't seem to feel he was in danger.
"He was a great kid. He didn't cry much or anything. He enjoyed my dog's company and my children's company," he told the station.
"Everything seemed great and then all of a sudden I'm eating breakfast and it turns out to be this."
