Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson on Wednesday suffered a grisly ankle injury. New York Mets' Eric Young Jr. accidently landed on Hudson's ankle and broke it, leading Hudson to be carted off the field during Atlanta's 8-2 victory, the Washington Post reports.
The injury happened in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's game. Hudson had pitched well, allowing only four hits and striking out nine Mets players. As Hudson covered first base, Young jumped toward the base and his foot landed directly on the pitcher's ankle.
Hudson's ankle buckled, and he collapsed onto the field. Young immediately realized what happened and rushed back to check on Hudson.
"I saw his foot as I'm going for the base right there in the middle, and as I came down, I knew I didn't get any of the base. I knew I got all of his foot," Young said after the game, according to the Washington Post. "And I pretty much knew it was probably broke right when I did it, and that's why I sprinted right back to him and tried to console him as much as I could."
The 38-year-old pitcher was carted off the field. His injury requires surgery, but the swelling in his ankle must first go down.
"I'm bummed," Young said. "You never want to injure anybody."
Young said he apologized to Hudson.
Mets third baseman David Wright, who witnessed the accident, felt for Hudson.
"He's one of the good guys in the game and to see him go down like that, and know something was wrong, it's tough to watch," David Wright told reporters. "You just wish him a speedy recovery."
Hudson was 8-7 this season with a 3.97 ERA and 95 strikeouts.
