Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner officially confirmed plans to expand the "Transformers" franchise on Monday, according to TFW2005.
Goldner made the announcement during a 2015 Q1 Earnings Conference Call when asked about the franchise's future as well as a possible release date for "Transformers 5."
"Our plan with the studio and filmmakers you may have heard some writers being hired and we have in fact brought in Akiva Goldsman to lead a group of writers to really create a strategic plan around 'Transformers.' We think there are any number of stories to be told from the brand that has been around for 30 years with amazing canon and mythology. We would expect the sequel to the 'Transformers' [4] movie to happen in 2017," he said (via TFW2005).
Paramount Pictures hired Goldsman last month to lead a "writers' room" that will work with director Michael Bay, executive producer Steven Spielberg and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The team will explore possible ideas for a multi-part "Transformers" sequel as well as potential spinoff movies, according to Deadline.
The first three "Transformers" films starred Shia LaBeouf and grossed more than $2.6 billion worldwide. The fourth installment starred Mark Wahlberg and earned more than $1 billion worldwide.
