A pair of Elton John's glasses was reported stolen at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday when employees from the Rock 'n' Soul Museum in Memphis, Tenn., noticed that it was missing from the display case.
The glass was not smashed, and the crime wasn't committed in a hasty manner. The lock was reportedly tampered with in a meticulous way, and someone had to have been using tools, as the display case was hardly damaged at all, according to Page Six.
Museum Executive Director John Doyle said that the glasses are on loan from a private owner and are insured for $2,000. If caught, the culprit could face up to 12 years in prison.
Museum managers do not think any employees were associated with the theft.
The Rock 'n' Soul Museum "tells the story of musical pioneers who, for the love of music, overcame racial and socio-economic barriers to create the music that shook the entire world," the organization's site reads. It is 15 years old and has welcomed more than 200,000 people from all over the world.
Elton John, the 68-year-old English singer, is widely known for his flamboyant, eclectic looks, often including platform wedges, bold colors, trendy shades or even a furry accessory.
This is the first time that an important piece of music memorabilia has been stolen from the museum. An officer processed the case for fingerprints Tuesday night, and surveillance videos are being monitored as the search continues.
Don't go breaking our hearts. Return Elton's glasses to the museum.
