'Avengers': Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans Apologize for Calling Black Widow Character a ‘Sl-t’ and ‘Wh--e' (VIDEO)

Even superheroes make mistakes. Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner have both issued apologies for making inappropriate jokes about the Black Widow character.

During an interview with Digital Spy for the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" press tour, the co-stars were asked about Scarlett Johansson's character Black Widow's relationship with both Hawkeye, played by Renner, and Captain America, played by Evans.

"She's a sl-t," Renner said before bursting out into laughter alongside Evans, who added, "I was gonna say something along that line. She's a complete wh--e!"

Renner also quipped that "she has a prosthetic leg anyway."

The two received major criticism for their choice of words, and have since sincerely apologized for making the disparaging jokes.

"Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize," Evans told JustJared.com in a statement.

"I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone," Renner also said in a statement (via EW). "It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour."

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" opens in movie theaters on May 1, 2015.
