Whitey Bulger was one of the most wanted men in America by the FBI for years. He's inspired multiple characters in film, and now the trailer for a biopic based on the former Boston organized crime boss is out.
The first footage of "Black Mass" was released on Thursday and it includes a glimpse of Johnny Depp's harrowing take on the infamous gangster
"Black Mass," based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill, both former Boston Globe reporters, chronicles the wild life of the mob boss who was simultaneously ruthless and an FBI informant. Bulger gave the FBI information on a rival mob family for 30 years in order to protect himself and his turf.
Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the role of Whitey's brother Billy Bulger, who was the president of the Massachusetts Senate for a record 18 years until 2003 when it was discovered, in court, that he communicated with his crime boss brother throughout his tenure. Guy Pierce was originally going to play Billy Bulger but he left the project in 2014.
Kevin Bacon stars as Charles McGuire, who led the FBI investigation in Boston.
The movie also features Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple, Jesse Plemons, and Adam Scott.
Most notably, Jack Nicholson's mob boss character Frank Costello in Martin Scorsese's 2008 film "The Departed" was heavily influenced by Whitey Bulger. It won Best Picture at the Academy Awards and Scorsese won in the Best Director category for the first time in his career.
