Buffalo Herd On The Loose After Escaping New York Farm, Runs Across Highway; Police Give Chase

It was the great buffalo escape of 2015.

Police in upstate New York on Friday were tracking a small buffalo herd that escaped from a farm and swam across a river before making their way across a state highway, according to the Associated Press.

The owner of the farm in the town of Schodack in Rensselear County believes the 15 animals escaped Thursday night and swam across the Hudson River.

Once on the west bank, the herd made its way to the town of Bethlehem and meandered between the river bank and Interstate 87, the AP reported. The herd eventually crossed the highway at around 11:15 a.m. Motorists slowed down to allow the animals safe passage.

As of Friday afternoon police were still trying to round up the herd in the woods adjacent to the New York State Thruway.
