The Denver Broncos surrendered a league low 17 sacks last season, but that stat is actually deceiving. Much of it had to do with quarterback Peyton Manning's quick release. The Broncos still allowed more than 40 QB Hits, a big no-no for a signal-caller who is fast approaching 40-years-old, while ranking just 21st in yards per carry average (4.0). With a mediocre running game and a few nagging injuries, Manning's level of play took a noticeable turn in late November, as he averaged just 230 passing yards in his last six games (including playoffs).
One way to maximize Manning's rapidly shrinking window is to provide him with better blocking up front. That means better pass protection and improved run blocking. To do that, the Broncos will have to look at several offensive line prospects in the upcoming NFL Draft. ESPN NFL Draft Insiders Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay believe Florida State's Cameron Erving (No. 28) and Hobart's Ali Marpet (No. 59) are quality additions.
"Can't complain about finding a starting center, and potentially a really good one, at this point in the draft given it's clearly a position of need. Ervin has Pro Bowl talent if he stays at that position.
"I'm doubling down on getting offensive line help for Peyton Manning and the Broncos here, as they took center Cameron Erving at No. 28 overall."
Marpet projects as a guard at the next level while, as mentioned, Erving is best suited for center. However, Erving has a lot of versatility and can fill in admirably all over the line. All told, both are talented prospects that would immediately alleviate some pressure off of Manning.
