What would it take for the Philadelphia Eagles to trade up in the NFL Draft for Marcus Mariota?
A lot. It would take a lot.
Head coach Chip Kelly is known to be interested in adding his former college signal-caller at Oregon. But the Eagles don't pick until No. 20 and Mariota is expected to go as high as the second overall pick. So how would this all work?
"One rumor, making its rounds in NFL personnel meetings, has the Eagles deal [Sam] Bradford to the Browns for the 19th overall pick," Mark Eckel of NJ.com wrote. "It's been widely reported that the Browns offered the 19th pick to the St. Louis Rams for Bradford before the Rams traded him to the Eagles for Nick Foles and a 2016 second-round pick. Despite reports that Bradford, in the final year of his contract, would not sign an extension with Cleveland, the Browns are said to still have interest.
"The Eagles would then send picks Nos. 19 and 20, along with [Fletcher] Cox and [Mychal] Kendricks to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 pick Philly would use to select Mariota."
Whew. That's a lot to digest. What isn't mentioned above is the off-chance that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Mariota with the first overall pick, putting all of these hypothetical situations to bed once and for all. However, the Bucs are expected to take Jameis Winston.
That is a steep price to pay from Philly's perspective. Two first-round picks plus two 24-year-olds drafted in the first two rounds. Would it be worth it if Mariota can become a bona fide franchise quarterback in the same offense he excelled in at Oregon?
This isn't the only trade idea being kicked around.
"Also being discussed by NFL execs is a scenario that doesn't include the Browns: The Eagles send Bradford, Cox and Kendricks, plus the No. 20 pick and possibly a later pick to the Titans for the No. 2 pick," Eckel wrote.
