"The Walking Dead" is television's most popular show if we are going by the numbers. The season five finale drew in a series high 15.8 million viewers. That's what we call a blockbuster show.
But could "The Walking Dead" become a blockbuster movie?
Series star Andrew Lincoln recently sat down with Inquirer and expressed his desire for the show to make the leap to the big screen.
"That would be amazing," Lincoln said. "It's something we've been talking about and dreamt of because it would be cool to see some snow. We were all going, just not to have to film in Atlanta where it gets to 100 degrees."
This isn't as far-fetched as one might believe at first glance. Series creator Robert Kirkman recently made a deal with Universal Pictures. Plus, "The Walking Dead" already has a rabid built-in fan base. Lincoln believes a feature length film would allow the series to explore aspects of their world that can't be done in the show. It would also afford the opportunity to potentially bring back some fan favorites.
"What would be amazing is that you can play with form, time and chronology and maybe also rediscover characters who are no longer in the show," Lincoln said. "Certainly, with that format, you can do something very interesting and ambitious."
Given the show's immense popularity, it's no surprise that this isn't the first time this idea has cropped up. There were a few whispers of a future movie back in 2012, but nothing ever came of it. Since then, though, the show has expanded into a companion series. "Fear The Walking Dead" will debut on AMC sometime this summer, though fans may be a bit disappointed to hear that the new show won't answer many of the biggest question viewers have.
Perhaps a future film will bring both series together.
"The Walking Dead" will return in October.
