A 65-year-old woman was found floating 200 yards off the coast of Maui, Hawaii on Wednesday in what appears to be a shark attack.
Snorkelers who found the body brought her to the shore and had paramedics try lifesaving efforts to no avail.
Ocean Safety Crews have cleared off and closed the beaches from Big Beach to La Perouse Bay.
The attack was near the Kanahena cove area of the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve on the southwest coast of the island, where NBC News reports to be the place where the snorkelers found the woman's body floating face-down in the water just before 9 a.m.
The injuries are consistent with a shark attack, as confirmed in a statement from the Maui County government.
The incident is being investigated and the Department of Land and Natural Resources' staff will be posting additional signage along the coast to prevent further incidents, said Kekoa Kaluhiwa, the department's first deputy director, in a news conference in Honolulu, Fox News reports.
The victim was said to be snorkelling with two other friends and at some point got separated from the others, and was alone when she was found. There are no witnesses to the shark attack, which is believed be the first in Hawaii this year, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
