The Minnesota Vikings brass, led by GM Rick Spielman, have been adamant since the outset of the latest league year and Pro Bowl running back Adrian Peterson's reinstatement by the league that he has no desire to deal Peterson and watch the bruising ballcarrier finish his likely Hall of Fame-worthy career as a member of another NFL franchise.
According to former NFLer and Minnesota Viking wide receiver Cris Carter, Spielman might be blowing smoke.
"I'm under gag order on the Adrian Peterson situation, but I believe something's gonna happen," Carter said Thursday while appearing as a guest on Mike & Mike, via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com. "But I can't talk about it."
Well that's sure to ruffle a few feathers at One Vikings Way.
Carter is, of course, using the age old trick of talking about something by talking about the fact that he can't talk about it - still following?
It's stupid on Carter's part and it's unlikely the Vikings would let a former player - even one as beloved as a Hall of Famer like Carter - in on their plans in regards to Peterson.
It makes even less sense that Carter would know what's going on in the Peterson saga considering he works for ESPN. Why would the Vikings reveal their sensitive, secret plans to someone who is paid to to talk about sports and specifically football for a living?
In the end though, the Peterson situation is sure to come to a head either tonight or in the next day or two. It was reported last week that if Peterson isn't dealt by the looming 2015 NFL Draft, he'll remain a Viking.
With Minnesota and Spielman reportedly seeking a major haul of picks in return for Peterson, a trade seems unlikely, if not impossible.
It will be interesting to see if Carter and his extremely cryptic not-talking-about-the-thing-I'm-talking-about revelation will be proven accurate or not.
