Welcome to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Mr. Joe Adler.
Just one week after Dr. Derek Shepherd's death on "Grey's Anatomy" last week, the show is adding some new faces, including "The Mentalist" actor Joe Adler. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that he will appear in the final two episodes of season 11.
The 22-year-old "Maze Runner" actor will reportedly play a new intern at the Seattle hospital and will join actor Giacomo Gianniotti, who has joined the cast in a recurring role this season. Adler has guest-starred on shows such as "NCIS," "Bones," "Modern Family" and "Shameless."
Patrick Dempsey's character died last week after being struck by a truck and improperly examined for injuries at the hospital. The 49-year-old actor called being on the series for 11 seasons a "remarkable ride."
"The worldwide impact has been extraordinary," he added. "It is incredible how devoted and passionate the fans are and I will forever be grateful and humbled by the experience."
ABC Network released a statement following Dempsey's departure from the show.
"After 11 seasons on Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests," the statement reads. "Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we've been proud to be the home of 'McDreamy' and the 'Mer/Der' love story. The devotion of Grey's fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey's talent. 'McDreamy' will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors."
