Tesla Motors Battery: The 'Powerwall' Home Battery Unveiled By Innovative Automaker

Tesla Motors is now venturing into the home energy systems business with their release of the Powerwall Home Battery.

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk says the Powerwall Home Battery will permit homeowners to get off the public electric grid and free themselves from being dependent upon utility suppliers, reports USA Today.

According to Musk, the 10,000 kilowatt-hour Powerwall home system will use similar technology found in the Tesla electronic cars – known to have the longest range per car of any pure electrical vehicles on the road. The home system will sell for $3,500.

A division called Tesla Energy will market the Powerwall. Consumers of the Powerwalls are expectex to be mostly homeowners intent on storing energy from solar systems. This will enable them to still run their homes off their own stored power even after the sun sets.

The Powerwall will be available in the U.S. later this year, followed by foreign sales.

Musk is also a chairman of solar energy provider Solar City, which offers stationery battery units. Solar City says it has sold 300 units this year.
