The Kentucky Derby is the equestrian and betting world's biggest annual event and this spring's 141st "Run for the Roses" was no different, as favorite American Pharoah emerged victorious from a field of 21 horses.
Amidst the unending pageantry and a sea of floppy, ostentatious headwear at Churchill Downs, the "most exciting two minutes in sports" managed to not disappoint, with the day eventually belonging to American Pharoah owner Ahmed Zayat and jockey Victor Espinoza.
Espinoza has now won three Kentucky Derby's and two in a row, after riding California Chrome to victory at Churchill Downs just last year, joining Calvin Borrell as the only jockeys to win back-to-back Derby's in the last 30 years.
American Pharoah, sired by Pioneer of The Nile, came in at 5-2 odds.
Fellow favorite, Dortmund, broke out to an early lead, but managed only to show, while Firing Line was able to keep up with the Derby's top two competitors and place.
