The young adult fantasy book series "Artemis Fowl" will be adapted into a feature film from Walt Disney and Weinstein Company. The film will cover the first two books in the eight-part series and will be adapted from Irish author Eoin Colfer's original novels by Michael Goldenberg, the screenwriter behind "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
The books follow the adventures of Artemis Fowl, a 12-year-old millionaire and criminal mastermind who routinely gets himself involved with other worldly beings and foes. With the help and protection of his trusty manservant, Butler. The books were published between 2001 and 2012.
According to NYDailyNews, The film marks a renewed partnership between Disney and Weinstein Company founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein. Disney had previously owned the Weinstein brother's company Miramax films until 2010. The brothers left Miramax in 2005 after relations with Disney grew contentious. That year the Weinstein Company was formed, best known for its low-budget but critically acclaimed films like the 2010 Oscar-winner "The King's Speech."
"If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy," Harvey Weinstein said in a statement. Apparently he was introduced to the "Artemis Fowl" book series by acclaimed actor Robert De Niro and film producer Jane Rosenthal. Mere hours after reading the books Weinstein told the two that he wanted the rights to the film.
This isn't the first time the project for a film adaptation of "Artemis Fowl" has been in the works. However, this is the closest it's ever come to being a reality. The films eight-story long arc would be perfect for a budding franchise.
Tell us what you think? Are you happy with the film's team so far? Above all else, who would you cast for some of the roles?
