The non-waiver trade deadline is tomorrow so it's now or never for a lot of teams looking to improve. Sure, deals can get done after the deadline but there are very few impact players who will clear waivers without a claim. While there are a lot of names out there on the trading block it's starting to look like a lot of them won't be moving anywhere.
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the White Sox have not been happy with the offers that they have heard for Jake Peavy and that they may just hold on to the veteran pitcher. Since Matt Garza was traded Peavy has been the best starting pitcher on the market with lots of teams in need of a starter. The White Sox have hinted that they are content to hold on to the pitcher and build around him in the future despite Peavy reaching a point in his career where he might not want to be part of a rebuilding project, according to ESPN. Despite all of that signs point toward Peavy being traded since he has been scratched from Tuesday night's start.
The Chicago Cubs have had the largest fire-sale so far this year as they got rid of Garza, Carlos Marmol, Alfonoso Soriano and Scott Feldman. Pretty much the only player with any value left is Jeff Samardzija, although SB Nation is reporting that GM Theo Epstein will want a massive haul in return for the former Notre Dame wideout.
There are rumblings that Phillies third basemen Michael Young will only accept a deal if it sends him back to the Rangers, according to Fox Sports. The Rangers are in need of a bat but with Beltre at third where would Young play? In order to fix their anemic offense the Rangers have been looking for an outfielder, especially since Nelson Cruz might be suspended in the Biogenesis mess. Other teams that have shown interest in Young include the Yankees and Red Sox.
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Red Sox are currently front-runners to nab Cliff Lee if the Phillies decide to trade him. After unloading Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford last year Boston would be able to take on Lee's massive contract. In addition to that the Sox have a ton of prospects that could be included in a deal. The one drawback is that Lee has a no-trade clause that covers 21 teams including most major markets so it is unclear if he would even go to Boston if they could get a deal done, according to CBS Sports.
With so many teams reluctant to pull the trigger on deals since they think they may still be in contention the Dodgers decided to go out and sign Brian Wilson to bolster their bullpen, according to CBS Sports. Wilson, along with his enormous beard, was hated by Dodgers fans when he helped the San Francisco Giants win the World Series but they will probably change their minds quickly if he can help in L.A.
The Astros are most likely trading Bud Norris as he was scratched from his Tuesday start. Norris has garnered a good amount of attention because he has pitched well in a tiny ballpark and he isn't a rental player like most of the players at the trade deadline, he is signed through 2015. Jeff Passan of Yahoo says that Pittsburgh could be the destination for Norris.
There are a lot of holes on a lot of rosters and only 24 hours left to fill them. It should be a pretty exciting deadline.
