UPDATE: The Milwaukee Brewers have signed Craig Counsell to a three-year deal to become the team's manager, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Although Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio previously noted the jobs of general manager Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke were safe, it appears that changed on Sunday. In Boston, the Red Sox suffered a series sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees over the weekend.
Milwaukee reportedly fired Roenicke on Sunday night, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. McCalvy also noted the team would name Roenicke's replacement on Monday and it is believed to be Craig Counsell, who has worked in the Brewers' front office since 2012.
Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote Melvin said, "I'd rather not comment until tomorrow," when asked about Counsell. The team has yet to confirm the news, but FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported last night that the team indeed hired Counsell to replace Roenicke.
Although the Brewers won two out of three games against the Chicago Cubs over the weekend, Melvin still opted to make the decision.
"This came together fairly quick," Melvin told reporters after Roenicke's dismissal. "You can look at the two or three games and say we played better but we looked at it how we performed over the entire month [of April] and how we performed over the course of the last 100 games."
"I told Doug I wished it would have happened a week ago," Roenicke said, via McCalvy. "I would have understood it better then."
The club is expected to announce the hiring of Counsell on Monday.
In the American League, the New York Yankees traveled to Fenway Park for a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. The two met earlier in the season at Yankee Stadium and the Red Sox took two of three from New York, but this time around the Yankees had their way.
The Bronx Bombers swept the Red Sox for the first time since 2006 with victories on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After close wins in the first two games, the Yankees jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Sunday night before the Red Sox opened up a five-run sixth inning. However, New York's bullpen sealed the deal by logging scoreless innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth, with former Red Sox reliever Andrew Miller notching the save for the Yankees.
The 8-5 victory helped New York improve to 16-9 and extend their division lead in the American League East by three games.
The Yankees will travel to Toronto to open a three-game series with the Blue Jays on Monday night and the Red Sox will host the Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game set on Monday night as well.
