Just because the Kansas City Chiefs were able to nab Ramik Wilson in the middle round of the 2015 NFL Draft doesn't mean head coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey are done seeking out impact linebackers.
According to a report from Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com, Reid recently had conversations with the Philadelphia Eagles in regards to a potential trade for linebacker Mychal Kendricks - talks which the two sides may revisit again in the not-too-distant future.
"However, a source close to the situation said the Chiefs, looking for an inside linebacker, made inquiries with several teams, 'not just Philly,'" Mosher reports. "Chiefs coach Andy Reid drafted Kendricks with a high second-rounder in 2012. The Chiefs picked Ramik Wilson in the fourth round but could still use an experienced, impact inside linebacker next to Derrick Johnson. Don't be surprised if talks between the Chiefs and Eagles pick up again down the line."
Kendricks, as Mosher notes, was a former second-round draft pick by the Eagles during the latter portion of Reid's tenure.
The explosive playmaker doesn't boast the size requirements preferred by new Philly head coach Chip Kelly and has reportedly been placed on the trade block, with Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports suggesting the asking price from Philly being at least a second-round pick.
Kendricks, 24, managed to collect 83 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles and three passes defensed in just 12 games for the Eagles last season. In 2013, he totaled 106 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and four passes defensed.
For the Chiefs, Johnson is set to enter his 11th NFL season, during which he will turn 33 years of age. He's also coming off a season ended after only one game by an Achilles tear and his contract expires after 2015.
With little in the way of firm depth behind him - James-Michael Johnson seems likeliest to start next to him on opening day this season, though Wilson, Josh Mauga and JoJo Dickson will all get their chance - it would behoove Reid to find further reinforcements.
If the Eagles can be haggled down from a second-round pick or some other deal can be reached, perhaps of the player-for-player variety Kelly seems so fond of, Kendricks would likely prove a fantastic addition to the linebacker group for the Chiefs.
