Vanity Fair got a chance to speak with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Aside from some interesting "Star Wars" rumors being confirmed, Kennedy also revealed an interesting tidbit about another beloved film franchise.
She admitted that Lucasfilm is planning a new "Indiana Jones" film to relaunch the series, though it won't be coming anytime in the near future.
"In buying the company, Disney also got rights, for better or worse, to less-storied Lucasfilm properties, among them Willow and Radioland Murders," Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair wrote. "A bigger prize is the Indiana Jones franchise. Kennedy confirmed rumors that another Indy movie 'will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I'm not quite sure. We haven't started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.'"
Kennedy worked as executive producer on all four of director Steven Spielberg's previous "Indiana Jones" films (as well as "E.T.," "The Goonies," "Back to the Future" and nearly every other amazing Hollywood memory from your childhood). It would make sense for her to eventually turn the studio's attention to the beloved franchise after they get their new shared "Star Wars" cinematic universe off the ground.
Chris Pratt ("Guardians of the Galaxy," "Jurassic World") has long been rumored to be a favorite for the role of Indy should the studio decide to reboot the franchise. Pratt led the surprise smash success of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" last year which grossed more than $774 million worldwide. He can next be seen headlining this summer's "Jurassic World." Pratt's star is on the rise and Lucasfilm may want to capitalize on his growing popularity by marking him as the next great fedora wearing archaeologist.
However, neither a script nor a director is in place at this time so making any guesses about which direction the franchise could go in is pointless right now.
