Martin Freeman will beat his "Sherlock" co-star Benedict Cumberbatch into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel has cast Freeman in the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War," which will premiere six months before Cumberbatch suits up as Doctor Strange in 2016. The studio did not announce what role "The Hobbit" actor will play.
"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office' [UK], Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
Freeman won an Emmy award in 2014 for his role as Dr. Watson in the BBC series "Sherlock." He also received a nomination for his part in FX's "Fargo" opposite Billy Bob Thornton.
The third installment of "Captain America" will come jam-packed with many of the MCU's heavy hitters like Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye as well as introduce a few new faces like Black Panther. The movie also may debut Spider-Man in his first film since Marvel took back the character from Sony Pictures earlier this year.
"Captain America: Civil War" will premiere on May 6, 2016.
